"Mineral sunscreens generally don’t sting and can actually help soothe skin inflammation," says board-certified dermatologist Noelle Sherber, M.D., co-founder of SHERBER+RAD in Washington, DC. ✔️ It may be a better choice for people with sensitive skin or eczema. Wang, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and Medical Director of Dermatologic Oncology at Hoag Family Cancer Institute at Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital in Newport Beach, CA. "For consumers who are concerned about hormonal disruption, specifically for children, I recommend sunscreens with mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide," says Steven Q. In fact, experts often recommend zinc oxide as an active ingredient for those with specific health concerns or skin issues. There are many benefits to using a zinc oxide sunscreen, including that z inc oxide is considered a safe ingredient for sunscreens and skincare by both the FDA and dermatologists. Regardless, remember to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. If your SPF is water-resistant, it will be indicated on the packaging. ✔️ Water resistance: Especially if you're at the beach or pool or going to be sweating, it's important to choose a water-resistant sunscreen. So, the Beauty Lab advises choosing at least SPF 50. ![]() ✔️ SPF: Though the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using SPF 30 or higher, GH Beauty Lab tests have shown that consumers only apply about one-third of the amount necessary to achieve the listed level of SPF. Note that some zinc oxide sunscreens may also contain titanium dioxide (another mineral active) or chemical actives. If you want a pure zinc oxide formula, that should be the only active ingredient listed. ✔️ Zinc oxide f ormula: Confirm your sunscreen contains zinc oxide in it. To be certain your sunscreen has this, look for the wording "broad spectrum protection" on the packaging. ✔️ Broad spectrum protection: Regardless of what formula or brand use, you want broad spectrum protection from your sunscreen to provide defense against both UVA and UVB rays. Based on the GH Beauty Lab's extensive testing, these are the best zinc oxide sunscreens for face and body to buy in 2023. When testing sunscreens, we send them out to real consumers to try - nearly 1,200 people in our most recent test - and after testers fill out an extensive questionnaire, our pros sort through the data to find the best ones to recommend. Our pros know about the best formulas and latest ingredients and stay on top of the current regulations. No matter if you use a mineral or chemical sunscreen, remember to reapply, especially if you're sweating or getting wet at the beach or pool.Īt the Good Housekeeping Institute, our Beauty Lab scientists regularly test and evaluate all kinds of sunscreens, including sunscreens for kids and babies, natural sunscreens, sunscreen for sensitive skin and more. Unlike their chemical counterparts that work by absorbing the sun's harmful UV rays, these mineral sunscreens protect you from the sun by sitting on top of skin and physically blocking or reflecting that radiation. The FDA is continuing to evaluate chemical actives and has not reached a conclusion on their safety yet (but recommends using both mineral and chemical formulas until then). Currently, the FDA has concluded that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only two sunscreen actives that are safe and effective. SPFs with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are considered mineral sunscreens, a popular alternative to chemical formulas. You've probably heard the term "zinc oxide" a lot recently, and it's for a good reason. We updated this article in April 2023 to ensure all products tested and vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab were in stock we also added several new picks to the list.

There are other limits to what AI can do when it comes to historical, cultural, and geographic context. This leads many AI models to opt for the safest choice possible, often going for muted colors rather than vibrant colors when data is unclear. In some cases, AI models simply have to guess. Clothing and other human-made objects are particularly tricky. Of course, some things can be any number of colors. Palette also supplements this data with user-provided text prompts. Combined with an object's lightness value, object recognition increases the accuracy of colorized images. Today's AI models understand that grass is usually green, for example, and that bananas are usually yellow. Palette, like other modern AI colorization models, improves on those earlier attempts partly by using object recognition to improve its accuracy. The first AI models often produced strange results, like a brownish waterfall created by an AI model in 2016. Some of the filters aim less for accuracy and more for an artistic representation of the image.Įarly attempts at AI colorization relied only on the "lightness value" in each section of a grayscale image, which it then mapped to the most likely corresponding color using machine learning. In my tests, the default Base Palette filter tended to feel accurate for most photos. This will feel familiar to anyone who has posted photos on Instagram or used photo editing software. Then, Palette presents you with a set of 20 filters, each of which produces a slightly different result within seconds. ![]() The process is intuitive: just upload the black-and-white photo you want to colorize. So we find the literal, physical level expressed clearly in the NIV translation here, telling us God has knit us together in our mother’s womb. The word beten can refer to the belly as a part of the body or as the place where the spirit of a person expressed itself and was satisfied. Sakak can be used as to “weave together, to hide or shield, or to rouse, excite, stir up”. This is seen in the use of the Hebrew words sakak and beten here, which again have ranges of meaning, of which David makes use here also to tell us something on more than one level. Again, we see first that this can be understood on the literal physical level as referring to the fact that God has created David’s physical body. The second phrase in this verse tells us that “You knit me together in my mother’s womb”. This is where the sense of qanah as to “redeem” comes into play, for, on the spiritual level, David is telling us here that God has also redeemed David’s desires, that his desire for God has been satisfied through his trust in God described in the first part of the Psalm, and all of his other “urges” can now be properly satisfied because of this. So David is telling us here that God has done more than merely create his physical body, but that God has created him with urges and desires, and one of those desires is the desire for God. The word qanah, however, has a wider range of meaning than merely to create, for the word is also used to mean to “possess, acquire, redeem or ransom”. So we find here, on a more literal level, that God has created our physical bodies. This is used here first as a synechdoche, a literary device in which a part of something is used to represent the whole. As we are aware, when the kidneys are functioning properly, this results in the desire (or urge) to find the restroom, so the kilyah was seen as the seat of one’s desires and urges, as the innermost and most private aspect of a person. ![]() Those bodies have desires, and this is where the kidneys come into play. ![]() So this can be seen, on the physical, literal level, as telling us that God has created us physically, that He has formed our bodies. The word kilyah literally refers to the kidneys, and one of the primary uses of the word qanah is as to “create or bring forth”. The phrase “created my inmost being” consists of the Hebrew words qanah and kilyah. The same word can mean different things when used in different situations. As we examine the first phrase here (“You created my inmost being”), we first note the fact that this verse operates on two levels through fact words can be used in different “senses”. This verse operates on two distinct levels here, which may be referred to as either physical and spiritual, or literal and metaphorical. The verse is translated as follows in the NIV: “For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb”. This will become clear as we look at verse 13. As we begin in verse 13, we must note again that Psalms are written as poetry, and therefore may be examined and understood on more than one level. ![]() This could be very disconcerting if not for the theme of the second part of the Psalm, which tells us that God loves us anyway, in spite of our issues and shortcomings. The basic theme of the first twelve verses is that God knows us better than we know ourselves, that He is intimately familiar with all of our issues and shortcomings. This Psalm divides neatly into two parts, with the second part building upon the first. As we continue in our examination of this Psalm, we now begin the second part of the Psalm. ![]() ![]() ![]() The signing event is not open to the public. “We are pleased that this new funding bill has been signed, and we believe that bringing our top scientists and students from Colorado together is allowing us to play a more significant role in the development of new efficient and renewable energy technologies." “This collaboration already has been shown to be a great fit for Colorado given the vast amount of energy research at our universities, government labs and in private industry,” said CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. He would have been my first overall pick in the following year’s draft, and I struggle to think of a single player, even Bryce Harper, that I would have taken ahead of him since if draft classes could be combined. By opting for retirement, Posey chose family time over a 22 million player option. He was an absolute natural, making all facets of the game look easy - and catching is really, really hard. I saw a whole bunch of him on Cape Cod the summer after his sophomore year, as he was just learning the catcher position. Posey was one of my very favorite players to scout. Qualitatively Posey is the 3rd best catcher of all time (behind Bench and Piazza in my book), and quantitatively he measures up better than you think once position is taken into consideration.Ī personal note. Bench is the only one above who was clearly a better defender than Posey (Bresnahan might have been, but the verdict on that one is lost in the ether), and Piazza the only one who was clearly a better hitter. Mauer accumulated 17.60 standard deviations above average, Torre 12.52 in nine and eight qualifying seasons as catchers, before moving to other positions, prolonging their proficiency with the bat. Two more players - Joe Mauer and Joe Torre - could easily be included on the above list. Beyond that, the similarities among the entire group are apparent as well. Gabby Hartnett (23.24, 15 qualifying yrs.)įirst off, it’s amazing how similar the two non-Hall of Famers, Schang and Posada, were in terms of both quantity and quality.I’m going to list those same catchers again (in that same order, it turns out) in order by this measure: Piazza again ranks first among our group, with 27.74 career combined standard deviations above league average OBP and SLG. ![]() Using league average instead of replacement value as a baseline is not typically something you want to do, but it’s perfect for measuring the value of the very best players, especially across eras. It only measures offense, and doesn’t adjust for position or home park, adjustments that would do Posey plenty of favors. I maintain a historical database that measures the combined number of standard deviations above/below league average OBP/SLG that every MLB regular has amassed going back to 1901. One way would be to use Wins Above Replacement (WAR), but there are plenty of other articles out there right now doing just that. Thankfully, he’ll be back at Oracle Park on May 7 for Buster Posey Day.So we need to take both quality and quantity into consideration to determine whether Posey belongs. While the Giants will try their best to replace Posey’s phenomenal skills and leadership on the team, fans undoubtedly will miss his presence at the ballpark. The future Hall of Famer is moving back to his native Georgia. Former San Francisco Giants star catcher Buster Posey has quietly sold his Lafayette mansion for $9.28 million.
